Having a dedicated desk can provide a real boost to your teenager’s educational performance in terms of productivity and focus (>> check out our previous study on why having a desk at home boosts school grades).
Choosing the right desk to match the needs of your teenager’s bedroom is really important. Make sure your son or daughter has the best chance of achieving their potential by following these tips on how to choose a desk for a teenagers bedroom:
Size and space
One of the first things you’ll need to think about is finding a desk to suit the available space. Before you go out and buy one – think about where it’s going to go, and measure out the space.
Once you have a desk in mind, you can also take notes of the dimensions, and mark them out on the floor using masking tape. This will give you a good idea of how it will fit into the space.
Image-conscious teenagers are more likely to be interested in how the desk looks, rather than how practical it is – so you’ll want to invest in something they like. Of course, your teenager will probably want to have a say in the style anyway!
There are 4 main styles of desk leg:
Cantilever and panel desks tend to be more traditional, whereas A-frame desks and bench desks are the more contemporary options. They’re all available in a wide range of styles, sizes and materials. For the finish, you can choose everything from natural tones and traditional wood grains, to bright, bold and contemporary colours.
School storage options
We’re not promising miracles here! However, having enough dedicated storage space for all those schoolbooks, stationery supplies, files and folders is one of the best ways to help your teenager keep their room neat, tidy and organised!
When it comes to storage solutions, you’ve got a few options. Whilst you can go for separate storage, you’ll probably find desks with integrated storage provide a better all-round solution. This is especially true if space is at a premium.
The UCLIC range of home office desks features a wide range of integrated storage options. These include single drawer, right through to those with multiple pedestals and cupboards.
One of the best things about the UCLIC desk is that they feature patented technology, so they can be assembled in less than 10 minutes. The system is quick and easy enough for even the laziest teenager to tackle!
Positioning the desk
You’ll also want to think about where you place the desk in the bedroom. It’s a good idea to make use of natural light, so place it close to a window if possible – just make sure you choose the right angle to avoid screen glare.
Of course, this depends on the size and design of the room, and may not be possible. If you can’t make use of natural light, investing in a good adjustable desk lamp will help to maximise productivity and reduce eyestrain.
