Let’s be honest, assembling flat pack furniture can be hard work. In some cases you might even consider hiring a handy man to put together your new furniture.
Before you get that far, we’ve put together a few simple tips to help keep you calm when assembling flat pack furniture - make sure you know all the do’s and don’ts:
Create a Clear Space to Work in
Make sure that you have plenty of open space to assemble your furniture. Start assembling the unit close to where you want it to go when it is fully built this will save you from carrying a heavy unit around the house until you’ve found where you want to put it.
Check your Parts
Once you’ve unpacked all the boxes (and found the instructions!) the first job you should always do is to check that you have all the parts you need and there is nothing missing. Before you start assembling the unit check all the pieces to make sure nothing is missing - you don’t want to get halfway through building your unit to find that you can’t complete it. This is an important tip if you want to avoid tears whilst assembling flat pack furniture.
Have the correct tools
Make sure that you have appropriate equipment to assemble your furniture, because you don’t want to accidentally damage a panel by using the wrong screwdriver. If you assemble all the tools necessary then the process will be quicker and you can get straight to work. Usual tools include; screwdrivers (Pozi/Philips and slot), hammer/ mallet, Allen keys (often provided in the packs) and sometimes a drill for pilot holes or handles.
Read the instructions
It may seem like an obvious tip, but you’ll be surprised how many people don’t read the instructions before they start, and wound up getting frustrated when they don’t know what part comes next. It is important to read the instructions that come with your flat pack furniture to understand how to assemble it properly. Often you’ll get tips on the angle or position you should build in to make your life easier.
Working methodically means following order in a systematic manner. When it comes to flat pack this means follow the instructions carefully and check that each piece is in the correct place before screwing it into place, so you know that it is being assembled correctly.
