The Definitive Office Refurbishment Checklist
10 ways to create a better workspace
07 June 2016
Written by Gareth Jones
We’re not all lucky enough to have the space for a dedicated home offices – chances are if you work from home, then you’re just as likely to be working in a shared space, like the corner of the living room, a hallway or the guest bedroom.
Making the best use of home office space can be challenging, especially when the room has to fulfill multiple functions. This week, we take a look at some handy tips to help you create a multi-functioning home office that works for you and your family, to let you maximise your workplace.
One of the hardest things to do when working from home is separating your work life from your home life. This is made even harder when you don’t have a dedicated office room to call your own.
Creating a dedicated office area in your chosen room that you only use to do work will help you to switch off at the end of the day. Ideally, you want to position your office space away from living areas, like the lounge, kitchen and your bedroom.
Positioning your office in a back bedroom that you don’t sleep in, or in the corner of a room you don’t use day-to-day will help to minimise the risk of work encroaching on your free time and taking over your home.
If you do have to work in your living room, then make sure you tidy things up as best you can at the end of the working day. The old adage ‘out of sight, out of mind’ will help you to relax and switch off.
Staying organised is important in any home office – and especially so if you’re going to be taking up space in a room that needs to be used for something else.
The key here is to have enough office storage space, so you can hide away all your supplies, stationery and papers. Having the right balance of bookcases, cupboards and pedestal drawers will help to keep the space tidy. Can you make use of some shelves or overhead cupboard space?
If you’re tight on space, then a desk with built in overhead storage, like those in the UCLIC range will help you to minimise the amount you encroach into a room. You can hide away your PC unit with a small cupboard under the desk too.
One of the key challenges with multi functional office spaces is that often, you’ll need to be able to rearrange things.
Having to move your desk, computer equipment and supplies every time someone comes to stay can be made much easier by choosing the right equipment.
Tech wise, you don’t want to be messing about unplugging dozens of wires every time you move, so go wireless when choosing your mouse, keyboard and printer - it;s also worth investing in a laptop instead of a desktop to be fully mobile.
When it comes to office furniture, going for mobile under desk pedestal storage with castors and a wheeled office chair will help you to transform your office space back into a home more quickly and easily - plus they are a really great way of adding colour to a small room too.
Having the right desks, chairs and storage solutions is really important, and will help to ensure you get the most out of your shared office space.
